The Atewa Range Forest Reserve covers some 23,663 ha which is comprised of two separate reserves The Atewa Range Reserve (236.63 Km²) and Atewa Range Extension Reserve (26.49 Km²). The reserve is part of the especially rare West African montane (mountain) forests (Upper Guinea forests) and it is internationally recognized as one of the highest priority rainforest ecosystems in West Africa for its high species diversity, high level of endemism and great hydrological importance (Larsen, 2006). Atewa is unique because it contains an Upland Evergreen Forest, one of only two such forests in Ghana. It was classified as a national forest reserve in 1926; a Special Biological Protection Area in 1994; a Hill Sanctuary in 1995; as one of Ghana’s 30 Globally Significant Biodiversity Areas (GSBAs) in 1999. There are 765 different species of vascular plants known from Atewa, including 106 Upper Guinea endemic species. Characteristic species of this forest type includes Cyathea manniana, Alchornea floribunda, Asplenium dregeanum, Chidlowia sanguinea, Lophira alata, Peperomia fernandopoiana, Funtumia africana and Ficus vogeliana. Atewa has also been noted for its seasonal marshy grasslands, known as bovals. The Forestry Services Division (FSD) is responsible for managing the Atewa Range Forest Reserve in Ghana.
